Over the past couple of months at Pembina Valley Physiotherapy we have been thrilled to add Athletic Therapy to our wellness team. So to highlight our new staff members, we wanted to give everyone a chance to get to know them better.

So let's introduce Abbey Peters.

  1. Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to become an athletic therapist? I was born and raised in Winkler. Growing up I played a bunch of sports including basketball, softball, track, hockey and skiing. As I got a little older I started going to the gym and began to love strength training and learn more about creating workouts. Growing up being active and playing sports lead me to athletic therapy. I was always interested in injuries and the rehab process. My aunt was also a physiotherapist so hearing her stories also inspired me to pursue athletic therapy.

  2. Do you hold any additional certifications in the field of athletic therapy and if so which ones? As an athletic therapist I have my Industrial First Responder. In addition to this I also have my Cupping Canada Certification. In the future I hope to obtain certifications in soft tissue release, concussion management and become a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

  3. What’s the most rewarding part of working as an athletic therapist? The most rewarding part about being an athletic therapist is seeing individuals return to what they are passionate about and be able to experience big moments after injury. Whether that is a national championship, senior game, return to work, go on a big trip or being able to play with their kids.

  4. Can you share a memorable success story from your career so far? As a student athletic therapist I worked with U of M Bison’s women’s volleyball and got to be a part of their Canada West Gold win and experience USports volleyball nationals.

  5. What type of athletes or sports do you most enjoy working with? I have worked with a variety of teams including hockey, volleyball and rugby. Currently I work with the Winkler Flyers. Hockey and volleyball would be my favorite sports to work with.

  6. How do you handle the pressure and demands of a fast-paced environment during games or events? Lots of practice and training makes handling the stress and possibly intense scenarios easier. Having a good support system and awesome co-workers helps as well.

  7. What is one of your favorite ways to unwind after a long day in the clinic? After a long day at the clinic I like to work-out, walk my dog or spend time with my family and friends.

  8. Outside of work, what are some of your interests or hobbies? Outside of work I enjoy reading, painting, going to concerts, snowboarding in the winter and biking in the summer.

  9. What do you hope to bring to this team and how do you plan to contribute to its success? I plan to contribute to the Pembina Valley Physiotherapy team by continuing to create a friendly, comfortable environment for clients to recover from injury and work towards their goals. I hope to become at advocate for safe sport and connect with athletes in the Pembina Valley.

  10. If you could pick one word to describe yourself. what would it be? If I had to pick one word to describe myself it would be thoughtful.
